Our speaker for January 2026 was Gill Blanchard. She gave an interesting talk about the Inland Revenue valuation survey of 1910 and the National Farm Survey carried out during the second World War.

Both surveys contain a wealth of information for family historians, both about buildings where their ancestors may have lived but also, for the farm survey, how the land was managed.

So far, only a fraction of the surveys have been digitised (The Genealogist is tackling the task), the records are available either at local record offices or the National Archives.

Gill has made some handouts available for members to view for 30 days. You can find them in the “Ten minute talks” section of the Members’ Area here. You will need to log in to view them.
