We enjoyed Linda Hammond’s interesting talk, from SW France, on Researching Criminal Children via Zoom.

She suggested that there were several reasons why children might become criminals: poverty, lack of education, poor living conditions, family dysfunction, role models, limited social services and limited legal protection. She gave a historical time-line of the changes that took place in the 19th Century, including the details of Reformatory Schools and Industrial Schools. She suggested that we might find family-history information by using the Proceedings of the Old Bailey 1674-1913 https://www.oldbaileyonline.org/, school admissions records, Quarter Session records, newspapers, Calendar of Prisoners and the Police Gazette.
