SUMMARY:Birmingham’s Back-to-Backs
DESCRIPTION:Many of you will have heard of the National Trust’s restoration of a court of 19th century back to back houses in Hurst Street\, Birmingham\, which are open to visitors. These were small dwellings arranged around a courtyard or in terraces\, each of which shared at least one wall with another house. Typically\, only the front of each house had a door and windows. The inhabitants of several houses shared a water pump and outdoor toilet facilities. Such houses were commonplace in central Birmingham but almost all were swept away in the slum clearances of the 1960s. Clive Katz will talk to us about the lives of the people who lived in the NT houses in four periods: the 1840s\, 1870s\, 1930s and 1970s. \nNote the speaker is different from those originally advertised. \nAt the Eden Centre and online. \n\nThe link to the meeting will also be shown here when you’re logged in.

SUMMARY:The Enumerator strikes back
DESCRIPTION:A talk by David Annal. \nDave Annal has more than 40 years’ experience as a family historian. A former Principal Family History Specialist at The National Archives\, Dave has written a number of bestelling family history books and is a regular contributor to Family Tree magazine. \nThe enumerators first went to work on the UK census in 1841 and have performed a vital role in each successive decennial census ever since then. It hasn’t always been an easy ride: confronted by hostile householders and at the mercy of the decisions made by the census authorities\, their stories shed a fascinating light on one of the most important sets of records used by family historians today. Using original documents\, contemporary newspaper reports and the census returns themselves\, this talk will turn the spotlight onto the men and women who created the UK’s census returns. \nNOTE THIS MEETING IS ONLINE ONLY \n\nThe link to the meeting will also be shown here when you’re logged in.
